What does it do?

Watchdog is a fully automated PC application designed for monitoring network and host performance. Uses include:

• Measuring network response time and availability.
• Measuring host or mainframe response time and availability.
• Locating network failures.
• Gathering performance statistics for trending and reporting purposes.
• Real time alerts of critical situations:
  

  • Display messages on the screen or print to printer.
  • Sound an audible alarm, ranging from simple beeps to full sentence speech.
  • Beep a pager or send a message to an alphanumeric pager.
  • Transmit an alarm back to a central collector for handling.
  • Simply gather data for reporting purposes.

Where can I run it?

Watchdog can be setup individually or as part of a group to measure corporate wide statistics. You can set it up in your Operations center so it can be quickly responded to, or you can place it at a remote office where it will simply collect statistics and report then back to you. It is designed to never need attending, unless you want to. You setup a schedule of what scripts should be run when, and Watchdog takes care of the rest. Even software upgrades can be handled remotely.

What kind of hardware do I need?

Any PC capable of running Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 can run Watchdog. It is a standard Win-32 based application that can run concurrently on a PC with other applications. However, you probably don't want to have your measurements impacted by other applications or unnecessary network traffic, so most customers prefer to use Watchdog on a stand-alone PC with it's own Ethernet connection to the network.

What type of hosts and networks are supported?

Watchdog can monitor any host that is accessible via TCP/IP. Other protocols will be available in the future, including SNA and X.25 and RS-232. This makes it well suited for IBM mainframes, AS400, Unix (and it's many variations), Unisys, etc. It doesn't matter if your application is TN3270, telnet, HTML, ftp or X-windows, Watchdog can handle it.

How do I set it up and maintain it?

Watchdog uses a simple scripting language that is the same for any type of host you may want to access. The principle is to send keystrokes to the host and wait for some kind of response. You can choose to write your own scripts (using the samples we provide) or leave it up to us. We can even collect, house and distribute your data and/or reports if you so choose.
